History Today10/18/1767 - Mason-Dixon line, survey separating Maryland from Pennsylvania is completed
10/18/1867 - United States takes possession of Alaska, from Russia, celebrated annually in the state as Alaska Day ($7.2 million paid).
10/18/1898 - United States takes possession of Puerto Rico.

This is apparently the day when the U. S. deals with its territorial issues. Of course, the settling of the Mason-Dixon line was before Maryland and Pennsylvania were really states. But coincidence must be observed, wherever it pops up.
