History Today11/27/1978 - In San Francisco, California, city mayor George Moscone and openly gay city supervisor Harvey Milk are assassinated by former supervisor Dan White . (Photo is of Moscone and Milk)

This incident was one of the first large public confrontations to occur in the newly open Gay Movement which was emerging from the San Francisco gay community. Today, both Moscone and Milk are mourned as martyrs of the gay rights movement.
