1/28/1986 - Space Shuttle program, Space Shuttle Challenger disaster: STS-51-L mission - Space Shuttle Challenger breaks apart 73 seconds after liftoff killing all seven astronauts onboard,

The crew included Christa McAuliffe, who was supposed to be the first teacher in space. Failure blamed on leaking Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster.
