History Today7/16/1999 - John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and sister-in-law Lauren Bessette are killed iin a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard.

The Piper Saratoga aircraft was piloted by Kennedy. Kennedy and his wife were traveling to the wedding of cousin Rory Kennedy, which was then postponed. Lauren was to have been dropped off at Martha's Vineyard. Kennedy was a relatively inexperienced pilot, with 310 hrs of flight experience and 36 hhours in the high-performance Piper Saratoga. The National Transportation Safety Board investigation found no evidence of mechanical malfunction, and determined that the probable cause was "the pilot's failure to maintain control of the airplane during a descent over water at night, which was a result of spatial disorientation.
