The Worst Ever? Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TimeLogThis article makes a case for President Bush being the worst President ever. I am sure many are in agreement with that assessment and I am just as sure that many are vehemently in disagreement. But that is not why I have pointed out the article. The reason I think it is very interesting is that in singling out the worst Presidents of the past (Buchanan and Pierce in the 19th century, Harding and Coolidge in the 20th)the fact emerges that all of those Presidents were serving in the buildup to a generational crises just as we are today. Makes you wonder which comes first. Do bad Presidents set the stage for a generational crisis or do crises situations produce the conditions for an election of inadequate Presidents. It is interesting to think about, don't you think.

Election Trends Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Guest LogIt seems like the recent 2006 elections revealed a change in the voting patterns that we have been witnessing for the past decade or so. Some of the trends seem tied to the new reality in Iraq and some are clearly dissatisfaction with the Republican stewardship but one trend is interesting in that it seemed to indicate a shift of the younger generation towards the Democrats. Are the millenials beginning to show their colors? They are still a very small part of the electorate, they even don't represent a large part of the young voting bloc, but they are likely to make an impression when they start getting interested. It will probably be more obvious in the 2008 presidential elections.

U. S. History

I have always wanted to put a list together of the 10 most influential United States (or pre-US colonial) citizens. After the fold I will start with a list that I think should serve as a good starting point but I would like to hear what you think as well. If you disagree with my choices, please let me know why. If I am off the mark we will rearrange the list. [original post - 12/2005]
Update: Atlantic Magazine picks the top 100 most influential Americans. How did my choices compare? See below.

General NewsJust wanted to note that the TimeLog just passed its one year anniversary. I am still having fun with it, actually still trying to decide where I want to go with it, but I would like to see more of you join in the discussion. Feel free to comment on my contributions or add your own. Registration is free and easy and your data is completely private. The only restriction is that postings be generally related to history with specific reference to U.S. history and generational ideas. That's not much of a restriction when you consider that it covers the past, present and future.

Guest LogI just read that Google Earth has added a bunch of historical maps that can be added or overlaid onto contemporary maps to view historical changes. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to use Google Earth because my computer is just a little to old and a little to clogged up for it to run. If any of you have Google Earth running I would love to hear what you think of it. I might have to buy a new computer. [PC Mag. Link]

Generational Implications of the '06 Elections Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TimeLogThis Newsweek article implies that statistics show the youth vote as trending towards the Democrats. Their theory is that youth are less tied to existing loyalties and more willing to change. So dissatisfaction with the state of the war in Iraq is more likely to change their minds. They also explain that, if the past is any indication, they will tend to retain these new-found loyalties. Looks like Generational dynamics at work to me.
