TimeLogThis link is to a summary of a survey released by the Center for Disease Control on the lifestyle habits of today's youth. It is interesting and revealing. Most of the risky behavior is dropping. It seems to me that there is a telltale hint of responsible hero traits hiding in there. Its still way too early to tell but these statistics are certainly suggestive.

TimeLogHere is another generations related article regarding the Millennial Generation.
"I am impressed because they are so much more optimistic and idealistic than they should be.
I am baffled because they are so much less radical and politically engaged than they need to be."

The Worst Ever? Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TimeLogThis article makes a case for President Bush being the worst President ever. I am sure many are in agreement with that assessment and I am just as sure that many are vehemently in disagreement. But that is not why I have pointed out the article. The reason I think it is very interesting is that in singling out the worst Presidents of the past (Buchanan and Pierce in the 19th century, Harding and Coolidge in the 20th)the fact emerges that all of those Presidents were serving in the buildup to a generational crises just as we are today. Makes you wonder which comes first. Do bad Presidents set the stage for a generational crisis or do crises situations produce the conditions for an election of inadequate Presidents. It is interesting to think about, don't you think.

Generational Implications of the '06 Elections Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TimeLogThis Newsweek article implies that statistics show the youth vote as trending towards the Democrats. Their theory is that youth are less tied to existing loyalties and more willing to change. So dissatisfaction with the state of the war in Iraq is more likely to change their minds. They also explain that, if the past is any indication, they will tend to retain these new-found loyalties. Looks like Generational dynamics at work to me.

We Are About There (4T) Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TimeLogWe are about there (4T). It takes some imagination to come-up with a set of predictions in a future scenario. God forbid some of the terrifying things I say in the following paragraphs happen, but in my humble opinion, they look like the most possible outcome for the coming 4T. If I were to compare this year's social mood to that of the last late Unraveling Era (as discussed in Strauss & Howe's Fourth Turning), this year would compare to 1926: government distrust, widening gap between the rich & poor, forecast of doom & gloom, greatly increased protection of children, growing tensions around the world and over-all economic uncertainty. In Chinese Astrology, 2006 is the Year of the Dog which means cynicism.

I see the following:
2006-cynicism

2007-world becoming more dangerous (threats of dirty nuke bombs from Osama Bin Laden & his Gang, & nuke-threats from North Korea & Iran)

2008-more nasty threats, rocky economy, housing prices start to fall; Iran/North Korea standoff show-down over nuke-threats

2009-Great Devaluation as Strauss & Howe mentioned is quite likely to happen. Gold prices will sky-rocket, house prices fall, but only enough to hurt home sellers due to losses but not enough to help first-time home buyer’s ability to purchase a home.

A dirty nuke bomb from Osama Bin Laden & his Gang explodes somewhere in the USA & this is the Catalyst for the 4T

Many of our youth aged 20-27, conscripted into the Military Draft to occupy Saudi-Arabia, Iraq, are on-alert for war with Iran & Syria.

Israel bombed by Iran, but the main Jerusalem Mosque: Dome-of-The-Rock-on-the-Temple-Mount is left intact; the rest of Jerusalem left in shambles.

2010-2015: war continues with Iran, Syria & North Korea enters somewhere in-between 2011 & 2012. Also, Venezuela allies itself Iran/Syria.

From 2010-2019 USA is a state of Martial Law Authority: elections are allowed, but much like in the Civil War there is suspension of Habeas Corpus & economy suffers due to controlled movement in Martial Law time. Protesters are dealt with immediately (many sent to a camp/jail). As a result of the Martial Law Authority & a large cadre of Mexican Immigrants attempting to start a new nation that includes California, New Mexico, Arizona, & Texas, a low-level civil war in USA erupts around 2011-2015. This attempt isn't successful, but human rights issues & internal fighting emerge quickly to be a challenge to the USA's existence as if the outer global turmoil wasn't enough.

North Korea nuked by US in 2016 & a deal made with China is made: some debt forgiven, but US must surrender any close relationship with North Korea, South Korea, Japan, & Taiwan to prevent any future war with China & US from happening.

2017-2019: USA economy improves with war efforts & Martial Law Authority decreasing, but is weak due to China leveraging due to foreclosures of 10-20% of US homes (able to do so because of 1-trillion dollar trade deficit by that time) China threatens war with US over oil. USA is bogged down in the Middle East, but has control over oil wells that China needs; Venezuela & Nigeria can only help China so much. USA deploys troops to Argentina/Chile to prevent Socialist Domino-effect Takeover of South American countries by Venezuela. Chile allies with USA in much the same way England did in WWII.

2020-China backs off from war, new deal made with oil issues with US-occupied Middle East & China. War continues in South-American Theater.

2020-US-Mexico has skirmishes & battles over immigration: it gets out of control: US threaten Mexico City with nukes/other bombs. In Nov. of 2020, Mexico capitulates & Oil-for-Immigrants treaty is set-up.

2020: Venezuela occupies Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay & Ecuador but not Brazil, Chile nor Argentina (Chile & Argentina allies with the USA, but Brazil a battle-ground). After Venezuela is stopped at Brasilia, Brazil, Venezuela surrenders around 2021, April (heavy casualties, about 200,000 dead in the battle), A Gen X women general like Patton (maybe a Georgina Patton) is remembered for heroic feats in the South American theatre of war.

Middle East: USA bombs Tehran with a nuke, the Iran Govt. surrenders. A treaty is signed allowing Iran to supply oil to China/Russia, USA, but much rebuilding of Iran is needed. Syria Also surrenders amid heavy fighting with US/Britain & other European countries. The Middle East considers Modernization. Pakistan goes to war with India, but only for a year. Result: stalemate between the two countries. Pakistan remains conservative & is slow to consider modernization. India rebuilds rapidly after the war & continues to look more look Europe/US all throughout the country with a rapidly expanding middle class.

Africa is all but ignored during the WWIII, so Africa remains a Marxist Hell with Radical Islam growing, but these troubles are seen as a small threat to the rest of the world & such matters will be left for the next 4T as the world is slowly becoming a fully democratized place with more modernization coming with each subsequent 4T.

A few words about the next High (2025-2045):

2030: first voyage to Mars:
USA, now close ally Venezuela, a few countries in Europe & Mexico are included in making the voyage possible.
New technologies are developed in new fuel sources as oil is depleted from the Earth: geo-thermal (heating of large thermocouples: turning earth's internal heat into electricity to "charge-up" hydrogen-powered fuel-cells for cars & homes).
Middle East countries are growing more & more close allies with US & contribute more & more expertise to science, especially from Afghanistan & Iran.

2035: big news: many cancers are cured. The Generation X leaders warn of genetic issues such as reviving of the dinosaurs (considered very freaky & to some immoral) & designer children (children genetically treated to have desired genetic traits): debate rages on these issues.

2040: on 3-D holographic TV: "Leave-It-To-Jose" airs as well as many Hispanic cast with 1950's-like theme situational comedies. Whites/Asians/Hispanics dominate the news in Science; Hispanics on TV & Blacks in Sports/Movies/Music. A more conservative tone dominates in America in the 2030's & 2040's. The music is similar to a mixture of Gansta-Rap & 50's style Rock-n-Roll.

Great strides in nano-technology are made in computing around the year 2035 comes with a new tera-hertz computer CPU & 10 tera-byte memory. A space elevator made of a material only available by nano-technology makes space travel cheaper & debates over moon settlement & colonization begins especially between China/EU (European Union)/USA- South American-Union (SAU-USA great allies in economy-government)

Spanish becomes a required language in many USA schools; likewise, English becomes a required language in Central & South American Schools. Result: USA, Central & South America are bi-lingual & uniform bi-lingual from Canada-North Pole all the way down to the tip of South America.

South America looks more like the USA & Europe in democracy & modernization & less-and-less like a set of turd-world cesspool countries like it was in the 20th century. South American governments work hard for more wealth distribution & therefore there is a rapidly expanding middle-class in South America by the 2030s.

Wars during the High: (2025-2045):
Africa & some war in Israel (even after WWIII & rebuilding of Tel-Aviv area of Israel).

USA sends troops to Somalia in 2030 to take out a dictator, but after the US troops leave in 2033, Somalia, although now free, has other surrounding countries becoming more-and-more Marxist. Angry & Violent Radical Muslims constantly threaten Somalia’s fledgling democracy.

Wildlife preservation in many countries in Africa becomes difficult; many species are allowed to go extinct or near extinction due to government malice & neglect.

South Africa, one of few democracies in Africa resorts to battle skirmishes & a huge wall built to solve serious border issues in the 2030s.

A note or two of the next Awakening (2045-2064):

The Awakening will be more Christian-based (like Missionary Awakening of the 1880s-1890s) instead of less-Christian based Awakening based the Consciousness Revolution of the 1960s.

"Rights" protested but denied: ability for parents to have designer children & human cloning are not allowed due to a landmark judicial decision made circa 2046 by 4 very old Boomer Supreme Court Justices appointed by a conservative Boomer (FDR in language, but Lincolnesque in beliefs) president in the late 2010s.

First Fusion reactor: Hydrogen-Fusion-Reactor in 2055: This mission is a project set fourth by the Millennial president in 2050.

Presidents: Boomer 6-7: 1993-2024

Generation Xer: 3: 2025-2045

Millennial: 8-9: 2045-2072

New-Silent: One: 2072-2076.
